Registration is underway for IAAO’s 10th International Research
Symposium, September 19-20, 2016, in Amsterdam, Netherlands! This
symposium, offered in partnership with URISA, Netherlands Council for
Real Estate Assessment, Esri (invited), World Bank (invited) and Thomson
Reuters (invited) will offer an exploration of the intersection of
public policy and mass appraisal standards, guidance and implementation
challenges. The focus will be on the exchange of knowledge for

Maturen believes he’s the right legislator to curb a controversial
practice for property tax appeals that drains municipal coffers.
The Kalamazoo County Republican from Brady Township has introduced House
Bill 5578 to curtail the so-called “dark store” loophole, a common
method of lowering the property tax liability for big-box retailers.

It's
legal under Kentucky law for county property appraisers to use digital
imaging technology to examine property to help set appraisals, according
to an opinion released by the attorney general's office.
The use of the technology meets the law's stipulation that each parcel
of taxable real property be physically examined at least once every four
years, "so long as such use fairly and equitably assesses property,
based on its individual physical characteristics," the opinion said.

The
Nebraska Department of Revenue, Property Assessment Division, has
processed the 2016 Real Property Abstracts of Assessment filed by the 93
Nebraska county assessors.
Preliminary analysis indicates that real property valuations have
increased 4.85 percent from 2015 to 2016, resulting in an increase in
valuation of approximately $10.16 billion, the Property Assessment
Division reported.

years-long battle over property taxes in Hancock County has made it to
the Ohio Supreme Court, and the Van Buren School District has money
riding on the outcome.
Whirlpool Corp. is disputing the Hancock County auditor’s 2013 valuation
of its property at about $11 million.
In February, the Ohio Board of Tax Appeals reduced the valuation to
about $5.8 million.

The
state Division of Taxation said it will investigate five towns to
determine if they must carry out property tax revaluations.
The announcement comes less than a month after three other
municipalities were ordered to carry out revaluations after it was
determined they violated a clause of the state Constitution that
requires property taxes be assessed uniformly across New Jersey.

The
new chief assessor of Northumberland County is attempting to solve a
17-year-old pending case involving five properties across the county
owned by public utility Pennsylvania American Water Company (PAWC).
The conflict centers around a disagreement over more than $3.4 million
worth of state taxable value among the five properties. The county said
the properties have a state taxable value of $4,607,575 this year, but
the Milton company has claimed the number is $1,175,670 since 1999 — a
difference of $3,431,905 just this year alone.
