Michigan Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by a big-box retailer in a
tax dispute in the Upper Peninsula, a brief but significant order that
will have consequences for local governments around the state. Big-box
stores have been reducing their tax bills for years by convincing the
Michigan Tax Tribunal that their stores are so large and unique that
they should be assessed at much less than the cost of construction.

relatively lax state laws, with results that are inequitable for
taxpayers. The task force currently charged with overhauling the state's

It's
Tuesday afternoon, and you just came back from a break, expecting to be
re-energized. You head to your desk thinking, "Ah, that was much
needed. Now let's get back to work." Your mind is commanding you to
power through, but your body is instead slumped over your desk. You
notice this behavior is starting to turn into a continuous trend every
day, and it's becoming clear you're mentally stuck in a rut wishing the
week would just end.
