IAAO notes the passing of one its Past Presidents, Ernest (Ernie) Beren. He was IAAO President in 1992 and served on the Executive Board from 1986-88 and on the Executive Committee from 1989-1993. The funeral is today, Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Dorfman Funeral Home in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The early bird registration deadline is today for the IAAO 39th Annual Legal Seminar Dec. 13-14, 2018, in Chicago at the Intercontinental Chicago Magnificent Mile. Fees are $500 for IAAO members and $625 for nonmembers until Nov. 1. After Nov. 1, fees increase to $550 for members and $700 for nonmembers. This two-day seminar will cover recent developments in real property taxation, wind farm improvements and asset appraisal, challenges in the valuation of special purpose properties, litigation strategies for big box properties, and ethical conundrums for attorneys. Read more

+ Verdict reached in controversial marijuana grow facility lawsuit >
A Denver Federal Court jury took only a few hours to decide against a Pueblo County couple who claimed a marijuana growing operation was ruining their lifestyle and property value. Michael and Phillis Windy Hill Reilly sued Parker Walton, the owner of Cannacraft. He opened a marijuana facility to sell commercially to dispensaries. The Reillys claimed, since marijuana is illegal under federal law, he was in violation of racketeering laws. They also claimed the smell and the noise from the sale of marijuana was illegal. Read more

The UK government has teamed up with property industry experts targeting estate agents who fail to report suspicions of dirty money used to buy properties. Working with professional bodies, the government aims to help estate agents spot the signs of money laundering and reinforce their legal and moral obligations to report suspicious activity. Money laundering in the UK potentially runs to hundreds of billions of pounds per year, according to the National Crime Agency’s National Strategic Assessment 2018. Read more

There are still hundreds of thousands of new apartments already under construction, scheduled to open over the next year or so. The Cook County assessor’s race might seem like it’s already over. No TV ads. No debates.
