Registration is now open for the 2024 IAAO Legal Seminar, set for Dec. 12-13 in Chicago at the Swissotel. The theme for the seminar is "Navigating Change" and attendees will hear from industry experts on legal topics of interest to members of the assessment and property tax industry.

Attendees may register online and fees are $600 for IAAO members and $800 for nonmembers until Nov. 8. From Nov. 8 to Nov. 29 fees increase to $710 for members and $950 for nonmembers. After Nov. 29 the onsite registration rate is $840 for members and $1,130 for nonmembers.

Continuing Legal Education

Continuing Legal Education credits (CLEs) will be available and IAAO will seek approval for continuing legal education credits for states that are requested by Oct. 1. The amount of CLE credit varies by state. Requests for CLE credit must be made no later than Oct. 1.

The Legal Seminar will take place at the Swissotel in Chicago and attendees can now reserve hotel rooms, starting at $164. Topic Proposals

The IAAO Legal Task Force is accepting program topic proposals for the annual Legal Seminar. The theme of this year's seminar is "Navigating Change." The deadline to submit topic proposals is July 10.

The Legal Task Force is seeking qualified professionals to present on topics of interest to lawyers and assessors. Possible topics include:

1) Artificial intelligence and tools for your practice
2) Economic and non-economic impacts of the development of sports stadiums
3) Valuation issues assessing affordable housing communities created through public-private partnerships
4) E-filing systems and programs around the country – how those systems impact legal practice and data-mining – the pros/cons  
5) Assessment uniformity and discrimination in under assessment Appeals
6) Cross examination tools
7) Preferential assessments – varying interpretations and unintended consequences
8) Legislation – varying interpretations and unintended consequences
        a. How to read/draft legislation
        b. How to properly consider the legal application of pending legislation
9) Senior exemption and freeze fraud issues
10) Residential level fraud from multiuse, primarily commercial 
11) Repurposing of anchor department stores at shopping malls
12) Assessment of data centers
13) Anatomy of a tax assessment case
14) Climate change: impact on assessing real estate
15) Chicago architecture – local perspective

The deadline to submit topics is July 10.
